Keyrings & Simplicity

For the past four years, my keyring has had only two keys: the key to my apartment, plus the key to the mailbox. I 'cheat' by not carrying a car key. I only drive 1 or 2 days per week, so I carry my car key (including the keyless remote fob) separately. Carrying just two keys is nice from a practicality point of view. They fit easily into your pocket, and it is very liberating to have just a couple of keys.

It seems like the size of one's keyring is a fairly good indicator of the simplicity going on in one's life. The more things you own, the more things you must lock up, and have more things to keep track of. I remember at one point, I had a huge keyring. I used to put both of my car keys on my keyring plus I had keys to all sorts of other junk (storage shed, all sorts of various miscellaneous locks all over the place), so I was always carrying around a humongous mess of clanky metal in your pocket all of the time. I remember at one point as a young adult (before I owned a car), I felt ashamed because I had only one key and took the bus everywhere. Now, I know a lot better and the fewer keys I have, the bigger source of pride it is for me.

I don't remember how many keys I had as a boy, but I had a house key when I was very young. I remember when I was a youth I had always thought of having a lot of keys as being very "adult". Now I just view keys just as a gigantic burden.

A few months ago I was in a remote rural village in southern Kenya, where the locals had the most simple lifestyle I had ever witnessed anywhere. They lived in houses made of mud and sticks, but I noticed that one of the houses had a pad lock on it! See picture below (the house on the left). Even people who live very basic lifestyles cannot escape the burden of having keys.

You many keys are on your keyring?

car key, apartment complex key, apartment door key, mail box key.

So, 4, but the mailbox key is so small, I think it should just be a half key. 3.5. :)

I knew I had a lot of keys, but after reading your post I had to pull out my keyring and count- I've got 10! Some I use daily (house key, car key, office key), others are almost never used (key to my mother's house). I really need to simplify my collection a little bit.

When a coworker saw my keyring a few weeks ago, he asked me if I moonighted as a school janitor. That made me realize that I need to shed some keys :)

I have 11 keys and 1 beer bottle opener. Very good post. I have too much to keep track of and need to vastly simplify my life... and ditch the bottle opener. Alcohol and drugs can mask stress. They don't help deal with the problems.

Interesting, it is great how you are still bringing in the points from your trip to Africa and tie them in.

Anyway, I have car key, house key, and key for my bike rack locks (1 key multiple locks) and of course the FOB

I almost never use my house key, if I felt safe putting it somewhere outside that I could get to in an emergency then I could just use my garage door opener... tempting.

How about online keys.. or memorized data?

Two: House and office (and a random number passwd generator that acts as a fob).

The set for the RV is immense though. There has to be at least 10 keys in there.

Good exercise. I went through this a while ago. I want to answer that I have 3 keys on my keyring: house, mailbox and car. But the honest truth is that I have multiple keyrings. My "backup" keyring has keys to my father's house and a second home I am about to sell off. But I also think there are keys on that ring that I can't come close to identifying. And I don't have a clue what's on my third keyring. I'm guessing it's keys to places I haven't lived in over 10 years.

But on a take-with-me-daily basis, I only have three keys.
